June 26 − Program arranged by Galen Heistand.

July 3 Program arranged by Carl Johnson.

July 10  − Ron Schwartz, labor lawyer, how to avoid labor law disputes. Program arranged by Bob Rosenbacher.

(Please remember to inform Mary Pergander and the Pinion ASAP when you have upcoming programs so we can keep everyone informed. Thanks.)

Other Important Dates to Remember

June 20 − Club golf outing (9 holes) and installation dinner for President Elect Chuck Frieman. Takes the place of our weekly meeting.

June 25 −Installation Dinner for incoming District Governor Pam Kerr at the Michigan Shores Club.

July 4 − Annual Fourth of July race. Proceeds from the race go to Family Days and other charitable causes. Day of race volunteers are still needed. Please consider helping with one of the club’s most visible community events of the year. It is a great way to demonstrate Service Above Self, and show hundreds of race participants the smiling faces and warm hearts that make Rotary great. You can’t buy better advertising than that. Barbara Struthers will be handing out brochures, stamps and labels at the picnic meeting today for volunteers to take home, assemble and mail. Goodie bags will also be assembled at Parkway Bank, date and time to be determined. If you are a sponsor and have items to be included in the goodie bag, please have them ready by June 26. See Tom Healy for more details about how you can help out with the race.

Weather was not kind to Three Guys and a Truck last weekend. Torrential rainfall played a part in lower than usual turnout and food collection. But Deloris Axelrod and Nancy Flouret deserve particular praise for staffing Rotary’s table despite the downpour which soaked their backs and overwhelmed their umbrellas. Now that’s service about self. Also thanks to Barbara Struthers, Bob Franz, Joe Boyd, Frank Lomoro, Kent Street, Jack Gagne, Mary Pergander and Barry  Clark.

Something to think about. Rotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee had the following to say about the importance of recruiting younger Rotarians at training seasons in Skokie earlier this year. “If we don’t bring in younger members, we’ll miss out on a great deal of energy and expertise. The strongest Rotary club is one that is diverse. It has members of different ages, both men and women. It has members of many different vocations and professions. It has members with different skills and talents.”

District 6440 is sponsoring another working trip to Ak’Tenamit and a new school being developed at Castillo de San Felipe in Rio Dulce, both in Guatemala. The trip will be from February 28 to March 9, 2009.  The cost is expected to be between $1,500 and $1,650. This is a wonderful way to exchange the weather in Chicago for 10 days in the tropics! If anyone didn't see the Guatemala pictures from this year, Barbara Struthers says she’ll be glad to bring a disk to the meeting with the photos, so you can look at your leisure.
