Picnic in the park with Rotary              It’s time for a picnic!! Our next meeting will be at the shelter in Jewett Park for the annual picnic. Speaker for the day will be George Balis who will tell us all about mosquitoes. There will also be a shelter box demonstration. The lunch will count as the usual lunch price for members, spouses are $10. Kids eat free. Please note we also will not have a meeting at Italian Kitchen June 19, as Chuck Frieman’s installation dinner the next day will count as the weekly meeting.  So next time we meet in the Italian Kitchen after today will be June 26.

The July Fourth race is just around the corner, and the club needs you all to step up to the plate. If you haven’t signed up to volunteer in some area, please consider doing so, and see Barbara Struthers for more details.

Don’t forget this Saturday’s Three Guys and a Truck event at the Deerfield High School track. Come help volunteer and bring some canned good to help fill a giant truck to help stock the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry. Our Rotary Club has been one of a number of community organizations to climb aboard this fund-raiser as it has grown over the years. New this year is an online silent auction that allows community members to bid on dinner with the Deerfield/Bannockburn firefighters followed by a tour of the station, a ride along with Deerfield police, and Cubs tickets among others. Bidding continues up to the day of the event Thanks to Rotarian Julie Morrison who has spearheaded this project with the three guys, and to Rotarian Frank Lomoro and Sunset Foods which has supported the event and will have collection boxes at two of its stores. See Julie for more details.

District 6440 is sponsoring another working trip to Ak’Tenamit and a new school being developed at Castillo de San Felipe in Rio Dulce, both in Guatemala. The trip will be from February 28 to March 9, 2009.  The cost is expected to be between $1,500 and $1,650.   This is a wonderful way to exchange the weather in Chicago for 10 days in the tropics!  If anyone didn't see the Guatemala pictures from this year, Barbara Struthers says she’ll be glad to bring a disk to the meeting with the photos, so you can look at your leisure.
