‘Three Guys’ keep on truckin

The Three Guys will be at it again June 7, running or walking laps around the Deerfield High School track as members of the community drop by to help fill a giant truck full of food items to help stock the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry. Our Rotary Club has been one of a number of community organizations to climb aboard this fund-raiser as it has grown over the years. New this year is an online silent auction that allows community members to bid on dinner with the Deerfield/Bannockburn firefighters followed by a tour of the station, a ride along with Deerfield police (they are promising at least three arrests that night, I hear, so stay off the streets), and Cubs tickets. The day of the event has also become quite a celebration, with lots of people dropping by to join the three guys in taking laps, earning $1 for the food pantry in the process. People have used the occasion to celebrate special events and birthday! Thanks to Rotarian Julie Morrison who has spearheaded this project with the three guys, and thanks to Rotarian Frank Lomoro and Sunset Foods which has supported the event and will have collection boxes at two of its stores. See Julie for more details.

3-H water project approved. The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation (where our Paul Harris money goes) have approved a $330,000, multi-year water and sanitation project that will allow members of the Rotary Club of Evanston Lighthouse to make a permanent impact on the residents of Aga, Nigeria. Our club contributed $1,000 toward this grant; along with 20 other clubs who have also contributed.

“It is impossible to overstate the importance of Rotary as a reliable and cost effective way of curing humanitarian ills,” said Rotarian Jim Grumley, primary international contact for the project and member of the Rotary Club of Evanston Lighthouse.

The 3-H Project, which addresses Health, Hunger and Humanity, is based on a partnership between the Rotary clubs of Evanston Lighthouse and Eziukwu, Aba, Nigeria. The clubs and others around the world have contributed or pledged $30,000 to start the project, which will be supplemented by The Rotary Foundation as needed, up to $330,000.  Shows you what a lot of Rotary clubs and the Rotary Foundation can do together.

Rotary Day at the Lake to Eradicate Polio, the last district-wide event of the Rotary year, will take place Sunday June 8 to raise funds for Rotary’s goal to eradicate polio around the world. There will also be plenty of fellowship and fun.
