Village honors Rotary’s Stan Rundell

Stan Rundell
was honored Monday night by the Village of Deerfield for his long service as chair of the Emergency Services Disaster Agency. It is also fitting, as Memorial Day approaches, to note Stan’s service to our country, and his interesting history as a World War II veteran and master instrument pilot. Stan has the distinction of having served in three air forces during the 1940s, including the Spanish, the RAF, and our own U.S. Air Force. Stan continued to fly many years after the war. To Stan, and all veterans who have fought to protect our freedoms, the Pinion says thank you.

Carol Spielman, County Board representative, presents “What a Constitutional Convention would mean for Illinois.” Program arranged by Barbara Struthers.

John & Emerald Sciaretta will join Rotary as honorary members today. Also  John Sciaretta will be switching out the new TV this week to try to get a TV that works with PCs.

Representatives from a Highland Park High School Support Our Troops drive will be at Rotary today to explain their cause and accept donations. A former student, Michael Baier, is returning to Iraq for his second tour of duty in August. Furthermore, his father, Dr. Tom Baier, will be on a tour of duty in October. Supplies will be delivered to Greenleaf Orthopedics, the Lake County collection site for Operation Support Our Troops. For more information, visit www.osotil.org

ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world, was recently one of the first charities allowed into Myanmar to provide humanitarian aid to victims of the devastating May 3 cyclone. The organization was begun in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, England, and has now responded to disasters in 33 countries, providing aid for nearly 500,000 people.

SRT teams including at least one Rotarian touched ground in Yangon May 15, and began training local disaster teams on the box contents and setting up of tents. Up to 1,000 boxes were transported straight off aircraft and onto trucks for affected areas. More than one million people have been left homeless by the cyclone.

ShelterBox has also made an initial commitment of 400 boxes to assist earthquake victims in China. Many of the boxes will be funneled through the Hong Kong and Beijing Rotary Clubs.  To find out more about ShelterBox, visit www.shelterboxusa.org.
