  Don Eldredge, pilot, friend, Rotarian

Don Eldredge, a 23-year member of the Deerfield Rotary, and a former World War II bomber pilot and prisoner of war, passed away Monday, May 12. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Don was inducted into the Army Air Force on Nov. 10, 1941, and after almost a year of training and preparation, began flying bombing missions as copilot of a B-17 “Flying Fortress” out of a base in England. On his second mission to bomb a German submarine base, his plane was shot down off the coast of France. Don became one of the first 50 U.S. Air Force officers taken prisoner by the Third Reich, eventually incarcerated at the famous Stalag  Luft III, from which the “Great Escape” took place. He and his fellow “kriegies” as they were called survived two and a half years before Patton’s Army liberated them from Moosburg camp on April 29, 1945.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Don worked in the publishing industry. He joined the Rotary Club in October 1984. Don is survived by his children Joan, Martha, Laurel, Jill and Don. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at the First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield. 824 Waukegan Road, Deerfield.
