Deerfield Club receives pair of awards

The District Conference was a big success, and a productive time for our local club. Deerfield Rotary received two awards at the annual awards luncheon. The first was a Club Service Award for sponsoring water wells in Ghana and Benin, sending Barbara Struthers and her daughter to Guatemala, buying a refrigerator for the Ak’Tenamit Clinic, and sponsoring a medical clinic in Brazil. The second award was a Community Service Award for our teen safe driving program, Nicasa program, and sponsorship of the July 4, robotics club, choraliers, Three Guys and a Truck, Community Service Day and others. Thanks to all the members who have worked on these projects and to partnering sponsors who helped with funding.

Martha Heck, Executive Director of the North Shore Committee for Special Education, and Don Eldredge’s daughter, is today’s speaker. Program arranged by (who else) Don Eldredge.

Future Programs Arranged for Us by Our Members:

May 8 − Dan Weiss will share an update on the project to build a Medical Facility in Brazil which we supported through Rotary last year. Program arranged by Tom Healy and Joe Bertram for Nancy Flouret

May 22 − Carol Spielman, County Board representative, presents What a Constitutional Convention would mean for Illinois. Program arranged by Barbara Struthers.

May 29 − Remembering When (fire safety reminder) by Ray Larson of the Fire Protection District and Linda Anderson of the Deerfield Park District. Program arranged by Jack Gagne.

(Please remember to inform Mary Pergander and the Pinion ASAP when you have upcoming programs so we can keep everyone informed. Thanks.)

Other Important Dates to Remember

June 7− Three Guys and a Truck. The annual food collection event for the West Deerfield Township food pantry. Corporate and business sponsors are welcome

June 12 − Deerfield Rotary Club annual picnic. Food, family and fun in the great outdoors. George Balis will be the program for that day “All About mosquitoes.” In addition we’ll also have a Shelter Box demonstration.  Mark it on your calendar and bring your family.

June 20 − Club golf outing (9 holes) and installation dinner for President Elect Chuck Frieman. Take the place of our weekly meeting.

June 25 −Installation Dinner for incoming District Governor Pam Kerr at the Michigan Shores Club.

July 4 − Annual Fourth of July race. Sponsors needed. If your business wants to be a sponsor, or if you know someone who wants to do this, let Tom Healy or Bob Franz know. We’d like to get our T-shirts for the race early enough to wear when we volunteer in June for 3 Guys and a Truck, the Township food drive. Proceeds from the race go to Family Days and other charitable causes.

Joe Boyd presents Club President Barbara Struthers with the Multiple Paul Harris pin for having reached the appropriate level of giving. The pin is a four blue sapphire pin.

Elvis lives. Our Hospitality Suite rocked, thanks to Christine Celik, who had the room decked out in black and gold balloons, little gold fountains and glitter tables, and wall portraits of The King and Marilyn Monroe. Thanks to Frank Lomoro and Sunset Foods, who  provided beverages and snacks and a big sign. Dave Wolff brought the photo board and board sign and worked Friday evening. Chris and Abe Celik worked Friday and Saturday evening, and Joe Boyd was on hand Friday. Bruce Piepenbrink of the Wheeling Club was spinning the tunes as DJ, playing music upon request, and even Past District Governor Tadashi and his wife were seen cutting the rug to rock music.

Double Jeopardy. Our own Chuck Frieman advanced past the first round of Rotary Jeopardy at the District Conference, but was aced out in the championship round by “little” Mimi Makar. Many of you remember Mimi’s mother, Mimi Altman, who was a member of the Deerfield club and the first woman governor of District 6440. Altman’s grandfather, Herb Angster, joined Rotary in 1908 and was a friend of Paul Harris.

Guatemala reprise. Barbara Struthers coordinated and participated in the District 6440 Guatemala Television skit during the District conference.

L issa Anderson, from the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook spoke at our April 24th meeting.
